The Venetian Macao Partners with EarthCheck

The Venetian Macao has a tradition of turning heads and being recognised as a world market leader in the leisure and gaming industry. The integrated resort has once more raised the bar in operational excellence by signing up with the EarthCheck environmental program. By working with EarthCheck, The Venetian Macao has committed to reducing its environmental footprint and to demonstrating best practices in sustainable operations.

Nothing at The Venetian Macao is done half-heartedly. At the centre of the world's largest gaming market, The Venetian Macao is the largest single structure hotel building inAsia, the sixth-largest building in the world by area and the largest casino in the world.

With more than 15,000 staff and over 100,000 visitors a day, The Venetian Macao recognises that by working closely with EarthCheck, it can reduce operational costs, improve energy efficiency and lower its environmental footprint.

"Environmental sustainability is part of our corporate commitment to responsible business," says Mike Naylor, Vice President of Facilities Management for The Venetian Macao. "Our vision is to be a leader in sustainability in our marketplace; EarthCheck allows us to effectively measure our sustainability outcomes against an industry recognised baseline and best practice levels, and to take proactive measures to minimise our carbon footprint."

The company has opened up multiple sectors to be benchmarked by EarthCheck including its hotel, retail outlets, exhibition space and conferencing areas. This will enable the team to report carbon per guest night or square metre and water use per visitor.  "Not only does this system enable us to compare our current sustainability progress and success against other world leaders with our own branded "Sands ECO 360" sustainability program, but it also provides a framework for us to continue to push the envelope when it comes to the improvement of the sustainability performance of our building assets," says Naylor.

With plans to operate multiple interconnected, integrated resorts, containing over 20,000 hotel rooms, approximately 1.6 million square feet of MICE space, over two million square feet of retail malls, six theatres and other amenities, the task of reducing the use of energy, waste and water makes good business sense for parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.

Over the past year, EarthCheck has helped more than 1,300 organisations in over 70 countries to reduce their consumption of natural resources. The EarthCheck certification program is independently audited and helps clients meet the environmental requirements associated with preferred supplier agreements.

"The Venetian Macao has recognised that by working with EarthCheck they will achieve long-lasting financial and strategic benefits," says EarthCheck CEO, Stewart Moore. "The EarthCheck Standard will help them address risk, meet future reporting compliance requirements and map the company's carbon footprint."

Many of the benefits of sustainable operations go well beyond the bottom line. Good environmental and social practice is increasingly being seen as an essential part of sound corporate governance. That's because sustainable practices help reduce risk, manage environmental impacts, and position the company strongly when it comes to securing MICE events.

"Our shareholders and customers expect this type of forward-thinking and product innovation from us," Naylor says. "We want to demonstrate how easy it can be for the industry inMacaoto follow suit."

Similar to the "Spa" indicator project, launched in 2008 with Six Senses, The Venetian Macao will also be working with the EarthCheck Research Institute to set a new EarthCheck Benchmark for the gaming industry under the title of "Casino Operations." This will create significant opportunity for parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.
