Brisbane- EC3 Global, in partnership with Insight Communications andBigBridge, has been awarded the tender for developing an Industry Resilience Kit to help Australia's tourism industry plan for, respond to and recover from external natural, health related, economic or other shocks that are beyond their control.

The kit is an outcome of the National Long-Term Tourism Strategy, and is being developed under the auspices of the Industry Resilience Working Group (IRWG), which is chaired by Tourism Queensland's CEO Anthony Hayes. The IRWG includes each of the State and Territory Tourism Organisations and the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (DRET).

"The tourism industry is uniquely sensitive to risk and crisis," explained Mark Olsen, GM for EC3 Global. "A range of major weather events inAustraliaand globally over the past 12 months has highlighted this more than ever before. Recognising this, the IRWG anticipates the kit will help the tourism industry to be better prepared for future risk or crises and be better able to recover and return to business after the event."

The Tourism Industry Resilience Kit will cater to both small and medium sized tourism business (SMTEs), as well as Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs).

For small SMTEs, the kit will provide information that will help them to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from crises as a means of preparing businesses for external shocks and limiting exposure to business failure following the event. The kit will deliver user-friendly content that recognises the time-poor nature of SMTEs.

For RTOs, the kit will help them to understand their own role in preparing SMTEs to be more resilient to risk and empower them to respond in the event of crises.

The IRWG recognizes that we all learn differently and that we are at different stages of readiness for a crisis so the Kit will be produced in both hard copy and as an online e-brochure that will build on existing tools and tailor them to the needs of the tourism sector. It is expected that the kit will be available to the industry in the second half of 2012.

Queensland Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jan Jarratt said the Tourism Industry Resilience Kit promised to be an important new initiative that would have practical applications to assist tourism operators around the country.
